Peter Thiel: the billionaire tech entrepreneur on a mission to cheat death
The co-founder of PayPal and likely the most successful venture capitalist in Silicon Valley is on a mission to change the world through technology – and to find a cure for death
By Mick Brown - 19 Sep 2014
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/11098971/Peter-Thiel-the-billionaire-tech-entrepreneur-on-a-mission-to-cheat-death.html
...Thiel is least comfortable when asked to reflect on himself. When I ask whether he would describe himself as a happy person, he ponders the question as if it were a particularly complicated mathematical equation – ‘Um… let me think about that. Um… I always find it difficult answering that sort of question because it’s hard to precisely compare with other people. It’s such an interior type of thing…’ – before finally concluding, ‘I think so.’
He has no great interest in music, and seldom reads novels. In recent years he has ‘dialled back’ on his chess playing – ‘It’s a very dangerous addiction.’ He lives alone but has a boyfriend. He has thought about having children, he says, and likes the idea. ‘Although I think you have to spend enough time to really raise them well. And I’m not sure I could do that.’ His friends are, for the most part, ‘loosely’ in the world of technology, who share his belief in the redemptive power of technology, his enthusiasm for conversations about macroeconomics, artificial intelligence, and, as Thiel puts it, ‘figuring things out’. He is, as you might expect, a definite optimist.
Thiel believes there will be a cure for cancer in the next 20 years, and that a cure for Alzheimer’s is within reach. Immortality, he allows, may take a little longer. He has given more than $6 million to support the work of Aubrey de Grey, the English gerontologist who co-founded the Methuselah Foundation, and is now the chief research scientist of SENS Research Foundation (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence). De Grey has famously pronounced that he believes the first person to live to 1,000 is already alive today.
The ‘life extension project’, Thiel says, is as old as science itself. ‘It was probably even more important than alchemy. Finding élan vital, the water of life, was of greater interest than finding something that could transmute everything into gold. And I do think people would prefer immortality to lots of gold. On a fundamental level, the question is whether ageing can be reversed or not. Many biological processes appear to be irreversible, but computational processes are reversible. If it is possible to understand biological systems in informational terms, could we then reverse these biological processes, including the process of ageing? I do think that the genomics revolution promises a much greater understanding of biological systems and opens the possibility of modifying these seemingly inevitable trajectories in far more ways than we can currently imagine.’ So immortality may be possible? ‘Well, “immortal” is a long time.
‘There are many arguments against life extension, and they all strike me as extraordinarily bad: it’s not natural; there will be too many people; you will be bored. But I don’t think it would be boring at all.’ He pauses. ‘People always say you should live your life as if it were your last day. I think you should live your life as though it will go on for ever; that every day is so good that you don’t want it to end.’

Demis Hassabis: DeepMind is the Apollo Programme for artificial intelligence

Google-owned DeepMind has ambitions to "solve intelligence and use it to solve everything else"(NaSA)
Artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer Demis Hassabis has revealed his ambitions for DeepMind and explained why the AI startup "joined forces" with Google in 2014.

Speaking at a recent Google ZeitgeistMinds event, Hassabis said that DeepMind had set itself up as the Apollo Programme for AI - referencing NASA's efforts to put a man on the moon - with its primary mission being to "solve intelligence and use it to solve everything else" through general-purpose learning machines.

"The idea behind DeepMind was really to create a kind of Apollo Programme mission for AI," Hassabis said. "Now at DeepMind we have over 100 research scientists - 100 PhDs - top people in their machine learning fields and neuroscience fields working on solving AI."

Earlier this year DeepMind published details of the first ever AI system capable of learning tasks independently. Using a general learning algorithm, Atari computer games were able to be learnt by a machine without having the rules programmed into its software.

Hassabis revealed that the company he founded is now moving forwards in its research to add in capabilities like learning abstract concepts and long-term memory, mimicking the hippocampus found in the human brain.

Current and near-term applications for these capabilities tie in with Google's other ventures and subsidiaries, such as improving recommendation systems for YouTube and predictive healthcare applications.

DeepMind's £300m sale to Google last year was explained by Hassabis by saying that the search giant's mission statement of wanting "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful", aligned with DeepMind's own mission.

"One other way of describing that mission is to think about empowering people through knowledge," Hassabis said. "Another way to think about this kind of AI, or artificial general intelligence, is that it's a process that automatically converts unstructured information into actionable knowledge.

"By trying to distil intelligence into an algorithmic construct and comparing it to the human mind, that might help us to unlock some of the deepest mysteries of the mind, like consciousness, creativity and even dreams."

Google is going to have more staffers than any other company at the annual Bilderberg Group meeting of US and European leaders, which begins on Thursday in the resort town of Telfs-Buchen in Austria.

Eric Schmidt, a longtime member of the Bilderberg set, will be attending this year's shindig, where the cream of society (and whatever else floats to the top) will hold secretive talks about a variety of world issues. But this year he'll be bringing Demis Hassabis, VP of engineering at Google and co-founder of the DeepMind AI system the Chocolate Factory bought last year.

British boffin Hassabis will presumably be a keynote speaker at one of the 14 specified speaking events to be held at the Bilderberg meeting this year. AI will be a hot topic at the conference, as is cybersecurity, and Hassabis will be expected to enlighten the attendees on the current progress and potential of AI.

A third Googler will also be visiting Austria for the conference: Regina Dugan, head of the Chocolate Factory's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group and a former director of the US military's research wing, DARPA.

Other notable techies will be making a pilgrimage to the conference, too. Tech VC player Peter Thiel is attending – which is to be expected, since he's on the Bilderberg steering committee. He'll be joined by Joe Kaeser, CEO of Siemens, and Alex Carp, CEO of Palantir Technologies, which runs data centers for US intelligence and military services.

Google's super-AI boffin, Bilderberg nobs, and a secret Austrian confab
World leaders to discuss cybersecurity and more

This is the 61st Bilderberg meeting and it's being conducted with the usual veil of secrecy. The Austrian police have the site locked down, there's a no-fly zone around the conference center, and participants are under strict instructions not to reveal what was discussed.

Under the circumstances, the tin-foil hatters will claim that this semi-secret confab is yet more proof that a secret cabal of world leaders is running society, possibly under the control of shape-shifting lizards, the Bavarian Illuminati, or the United Nations as part of a plan to bring about One World Government.

In fact, it's more of a chance for world leaders in politics, business, and technology to exchange ideas frankly without having to hold back for fear of being quoted. Lobbying for specific causes undoubtedly is done, but no more than at your basic chamber of commerce meeting or G7 chinwag
