Al Fayed brands Prince Philip a Nazi and the Royals the 'Dracula family'




Mohamed Al Fayed today claimed that Diana, Princess of Wales, had told him personally that she was pregnant before she and his son, Dodi, died.

The Harrods boss, in his first sensational evidence at the High Court inquest into their deaths, said Diana had told him alone she was expecting a baby.

He claimed the couple were planning to announce their engagement as soon as she had spoken to her two sons after her holiday in France.

Mr Al Fayed said: "Diana told me on the telephone that she was pregnant. I am the only person they told.

"They told me they were engaged and would announce their engagement on Monday morning. She would speak to her sons when she returned from Paris."

The tycoon tycoon also dubbed the Royal family "that Dracula family" and told the court that Diana and Dodi were not killed in a tragic accident but murdered.

And he launched an astonishing attack on the Duke of Edinburgh, calling him a "Nazi" and a "racist".

Arriving at the Royal Courts of Justice this morning, Mr Al Fayed, 75, had left no one in any doubt that he intended to speak his mind.

Surrounded by photographers, he gave a wry smile as he entered the building and announced: "I've been fighting for 10 years.

"This is the moment for me to say exactly what I feel happened to my son and Diana."

And true to his word, he cut almost immediately to the chase with the murder allegation being among his first words to the jury.

He began by stating that he would "make no allegations" and simply declare his beliefs about how the couple died.

But then he told the court: "Princess Diana also told me personally before and during the holiday we shared in July 1997 of her fears.

"She told me that she knew Prince Philip and Prince Charles were trying to get rid of her."

Of Philip, he said: "It's time to send him back to Germany from where he comes. You want to know his original name - it ends with Frankenstein."

Ian Burnett QC, for the coroner, commenting on Mr al Fayed's remarks, said: "This stems from your belief that Prince Philip is not only a racist but a Nazi as well."

At the beginning of his evidence, Mr al Fayed read out a statement in which he addressed his main concerns about the crash and the points he wanted the inquest to deal with.

The tycoon said Diana had told him she had kept a wooden box and if anything was to happen to her he must make sure the contents of the box were made public.

He said he spoke to Mr Burrell immediately after the crash and was assured by the butler that the box would be kept safe.

"I told him, if anybody tried to tamper with the contents, to tell me," he said.

"He did not keep his promise, the next I heard he had been arrested."

Mr Al Fayed said Diana's sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, had come to him two days after the crash.

"She told me that she thought the crash was suspicious, that she would find the box and keep its contents safe. She has not done so."

He added: "I am certain, also, that she was part of the cover-up."

The Harrods boss said he had been asked to provide proof of all of his claims, but told the jury: "You want me to get the proof but I am facing a steel wall from the security services.

"I have been fighting for 10 years to be where we are."

Mr al Fayed went into details about his belief that blood samples apparently taken from Mr Paul after his death were not actually his.

He said: "It's proved black and white that the blood being taken was not Henri Paul's blood.

"The blood had been taken from someone in the mortuary who had been breathing carbon monoxide by the pathologist who refused to appear because they know their arguments are false and it's baloney and its not facts."

Mr Al Fayed told the inquest he believed the murder was likely to have been carried out by photographer James Andanson, who has since died, on the orders on the security services.

He said: "There was one paparazzi member in the pay of the security services, this is likely to have been James Andanson, who exacted the murder in his own Fiat, pushed the car and a strobe light having been used to blind Henri Paul."

Mr Al Fayed also raised concerns about a message - dubbed the Mishcon note - written by Diana's divorce lawyer Lord Mishcon after an October 1995 meeting outlining her fears that there was a plot to kill her in a car crash.

In the strictest of confidence Lord Mishcon passed it on to police following a meeting with the then Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Condon after the Princess's death.

It was only when Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, produced a note from the Princess making very similar allegations in the Daily Mirror in October 2003, while Sir John Stevens was head of the Met, that the police agreed to hand over the Mishcon note.

It was sent to the coroner in December 2003.

Reading from a statement, Mr al Fayed said: "My belief that my son and Princess Diana were murdered was confirmed when I learned that the two leading Commissioners - Lord Condon and Lord Stevens - did not show the coroner the note made by a leading lawyer, Lord Mishcon, detailing the Princess' fears for her life."

He added: "I cannot believe that they sat upon such an important note and did not pass it on to the (examining French Magistrate) Judge Stephan in Paris and (the then coroner) Michael Burgess.

"I believe that they acted unprofessionally and they must have no conscience."

The Harrods boss described the note as "devastating" and said it explained Diana's fears in "black and white".

At one point this morning, Mr Al Fayed held up a copy of today's Sun newspaper, which alleges that Mr Burrell has admitted he did not tell the whole truth when he appeared at the inquest.

Ian Burnett, counsel to the inquest, asked the Harrods boss not to read out anything from the paper.

Mr Al Fayed said: "He's been sitting here in the witness box talking about baloney things... It's important to bring him back."

Lord Justice Scott Baker later addressed the issue, telling the court: "This is something that's certainly being investigated. I have called for the tape. We will certainly want to know the circumstances under which it was obtained."

Mr Al Fayed broke down in the witness box as he was asked about the moment he was told of his son's death.

Asked by Mr Burnett: "Can you remember who telephoned you with this dreadful news?"

Mr Al Fayed replied: "I think one of security, I think maybe Kes Wingfield, to the best of my recollection."

Mr Burnett asked the Harrods owner if he remembered a call from the Ritz hotel president Frank Klein. He replied: "It's difficult. I'd like to know why you are asking me things like that."

Mr Klein has previously told the inquest that he telephoned Mr al Fayed to break the news as soon as he was informed and recounted how his boss told him: "This is not an accident."

Mr al Fayed told the jury today: "Security called me; he called me after that. I told him exactly what collected in my mind, all what Diana told me, exactly what happened."

The Harrods boss insists the Paris car crash that killed Dodi, Diana and their driver, Henri Paul, on August 31, 1997 was the work of MI6 at the behest of the Duke of Edinburgh.

The tycoon also believes the Establishment could not accept an Egyptian Muslim as a stepfather to the future King of England.

He has been waiting more than a decade for an official chance to outline his belief that the Royal family were behind Diana's murder.

His testimony, however, is unlikely to be plain-sailing as many of his allegations surrounding the crash have already been disputed in court.

For the first time, his conspiracy theories will be put under the microscope and dissected by a team of top-flight QCs in cross-examination.

The inquest has already heard there is no medical evidence that she was pregnant, but Mr al Fayed is likely to say he was told so by Diana.

The jury has heard evidence that Dodi did buy Diana a ring - a diamond-crusted design from the Repossi jewellers - hours before their deaths.

But the suggestion that it was an engagement ring has been challenged and the court has heard that it was Mr Al Fayed who settled the bill for it only after the couple had died.

Mr Al Fayed also believes that driver Henri Paul - who was also killed in the crash - was not drink-driving as suggested by blood tests.

He believes the tests were faked, and that he was distracted by a blinding flash of light, possibly from a stun gun.

The inquest has been told that bar records from the Ritz suggest Mr Paul drank two double measures of Ricard liqueur.

Mr Al Fayed is also likely to be challenged to produce evidence backing up his allegation that MI6 were involved in the crash.
