Burrell to avoid perjury investigation until after inquest
Friday, 07 Mar 2008 14:46
Paul Burrell has refused to return to the UK to give evidence

The Metropolitan police have said that a perjury investigation into the former royal butler Paul Burrell will not take place until after the inquest into the death of Princess Diana.

Mr Burrell has refused to return to give evidence at the inquest after the coroner asked him to explain comments published in the Sun newspaper apparently claiming he deliberately misinformed the court.

Yesterday, Lord Justice Scott Baker said that he could not force Mr Burrell to return, as he was currently outside of his jurisdiction in the US.

Mr Burrell, 49, rejects the allegations of perjury and has refused to return to the UK or give evidence via video-link.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said today: "Any action the Metropolitan police service would take around allegations of perjury would not be dealt with until conclusion of the inquests.

"Any decision taken would be in consultation with the coroner after the jury have reached their verdict."

Mr Burrell made the controversial comments to an undercover Sun reporter at a New York hotel on February 18th.

The newspaper claims he admitted to deliberately holding back information and introducing "red herrings" into his evidence.

The inquest into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi al-Fayed in a Paris car crash in 1997 continues.

End of story
