Peter Thiel has proven that he knows a good idea when he sees one. He invested in Facebook when it was just a dorm-room operation and helped start up PayPal only to sell it to eBay months later for $1.5 billion.
Now the venture capitalist wants the world to know he has a good idea, and the sea is one.
Thiel’s latest endeavor is making waves online after a profile in Details magazine has revealed that the billionaire with ties to the Bilderberg group has put $1.25 million towards developing a floating island of sovereign nations free of rules and regulations.
The Seastead Institute has been trying to get investors to back them for years now. It’s the grand-plan of Patri Friedman, who wants to launch the first free-floating flotilla of oil-rig-resting offices off the Pacific Coast in 2012. By 2050, Friedman hopes to have millions of seasteaders residing within a frontier crafted “for experimenting with new ideas for government.” Beyond the laws of the land, those residing on the movable structures will be able to start anew, incorporating libertarian-minded agendas that’ll rescind restrictions and allow man to make a modern world without, well, The Man.
"When you start a company, true freedom is at the beginning of things," Thiel tells Details. "The United States Constitution had things you could do at the beginning that you couldn't do later. So the question is, can you go back to the beginning of things? How do you start over?"
“We’re at this pretty important point in society where we can either find a way to rediscover a frontier, or we’re going to be forced to change in a way that’s really tough,” adds the investor.
Thiel has been contributing money to the Seastead Institute for years now, and the recent interview he gave confirms that he is certainly still interested. He has more than doubled his first contribution to the cause, which was for $500,000 back in 2008.
"There are quite a lot of people who think it's not possible," Thiel said the next year at a Seasteading Institute Conference. "That's a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late."
Until it’s too late? That’s rather ominous omen being broadcast from Thiel, so perhaps it’s in the best interest of other Libertarians to sign on to ship out to the Pacific before America sinks into despair. After all, he was right about Facebook, and that deal made him a billionaire.
Friedman hopes to have a full-time settlement in operation by 2018.

EU Van Rompuy To Hold Informal Summit End May Or Early June


STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said Friday that he is seeking to hold an informal summit of European Union leaders at the end of May or in early June.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt Van Rompuy said the summit would focus on "jobs and growth".

Van Rompuy said that the talk of growth had been on the agenda for a long time and wasn't something which had just come up. He also said there was no clash between the need for fiscal consolidation and the emphasis on growth.

"There is no opposition between austerity and growth," he said.

Memphis – Hundreds of patriots were on hand for two consecutive rallies held in Memphis on April 27, one at noon and one in the evening. Many pledged to bring busloads of other like-minded advocates for American sovereignty to Chantilly, Va. on theweekend of May 31-June 3 to protest the annual meeting of the secretive Bilderberg group being held there.

Bilderberg will meet in Chantilly at the Westfields Marriott, a short distance from Dulles International Airport, some 30 miles outside Washington, D.C.

Bilderberg previously met there in 2002 and then again in 2008. A gathering of high-level figures from the elite ranks of global finance and industry in the self-interested sphere of influence of the plutocratic Rothschild and Rockefeller families, Bilderberg works to direct the course of world affairs, unimpeded by popular concerns, rightly raising the hackles of the kind of good patriots who gathered in Memphis.

In Memphis, those attending represented a wide array of patriot and civic organizations. The gathering was organized by a local man, James Stewart, a reader of AMERICAN FREE PRESS. This writer was on hand to speak, representing AFP.

Support for the maverick Republican presidential campaign of Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) seemed unanimous, all expressing strong support for Paul’s call for all U.S. troops to be brought home to defend U.S. borders.

“I will vote for Ron Paul whether he is nominated or not. I will write his name in. I can’t stand the idea of either Obama or Mitt Romney as president,” said one. Many agreed.

Others argued that although Romney was bad, Obama had not illegally attacked Iran despite of Israel’s insistence,whereas Romney, if president, certainly would. A recent poll of its readers by AFP found that many of those responding rejected the idea that Paul or any other third party candidate enter the fall election campaign, fearing that a split opposition vote would allow Obama to win reelection.

However, some critics of that proposition point out that, surprisingly, many national polls actually show that Paul has a stronger base of support among self-described “liberal” voters than among self-described “conservative” and “tea party” voters, suggesting that Paul would perhaps draw more votes away from Obama than from Romney.

SENIOR Eurocrats are secretly plotting to create a super-powerful EU president to realise their dream of abolishing ¬Britain, we can reveal.
A covert group of EU foreign ministers has drawn up plans for merging the jobs currently done by Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council, and Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.

The new bureaucrat, who would not be directly elected by voters, is set to get sweeping control over the entire EU and force member countries into ever-greater political and economic union.

“The only hope for Britain is to leave the EU and become an independent nation.”

Euro-MP Paul Nuttall, of the UK Independence Party, said: “This is a truly ridiculous idea that must never be allowed to happen. It sounds as if they are trying to go back to the days of the Holy Roman Emperor.”

At present, the two senior EU bureaucrats, Mr Barroso and Mr Van Rompuy, are locked in a bitter power struggle to determine who is the true big cheese or “grand fromage” in Europe. Former Portuguese premier Mr Barroso, who heads the EU’s executive arm and was elected to his post by members of the European Union, is understood to resent the rival fiefdom of Belgian Mr Van Rompuy, who was chosen by the heads of ¬government of EU member states to represent them.
Under the plan, a single figure would be elected by Euro-MPs to perform both roles.

Supporters of the move believe that the rival presidencies are undermining the EU’s ability to speak with a single voice. They argue that merging the two jobs will create a powerful European leader who is capable of pursuing the federalist dream of a united Europe which has been severely shaken by the eurozone crisis.

Lord Stoddart confirmed the existence of the plot thanks to a parliamentary written answer in the House of Lords. He asked Foreign Office ministers to reveal what they knew about the merger talks.

In response to his inquiry, Tory Foreign Office minister Lord Howell of Guildford said: “We are aware of one group of EU foreign ministers meeting on an informal basis to discuss a variety of issues related to the future governance of the EU.

Lord Howell added: “A merger of the two presidencies would create a potential conflict of interest, undermine the quality of the EU’s decision-making processes and upset the institutional balance within the EU.” Lord Stoddart said: “These sorts of informal discussions within the EU have a habit of rapidly being transferred into formal proposals.

“Since the Government is not party to these discussions, its reservations are academic.

“Such a merger would represent a massive shift of power into the hands of a single, unelected bureaucrat. The Government should be taking this far more seriously and voicing its objections very strongly.”

He added: “The holder of this new office would be both Europe’s political and administrative leader, giving them far more powers than those given to the US president.

“It really is a great disappointment that we have a Conservative-led Government that is supposed to be Eurosceptic yet ministers just go along with this.”

A Transatlantic growth agenda

Since the 2008 financial crisis, policymakers have taken extraordinary action to stave off economic catastrophe, ensure financial stability, and sustain employment levels. Our worst fears have not materialized, yet there remains a palpable sense of trepidation about the future.

Economic growth is urgently needed and is our best hope for job creation on both sides of the Atlantic. To achieve this, stronger cooperation between the United States and the European Union is vital to prosperity. Yet, sustainable economic growth requires private investment. Solid and sustained investment is one of the keys to unleashing and driving innovation, and the United States and the European Union are leaders in fostering innovation and investment in critical industries, such as technology. High technology is the foundation on which our 21st Century global economies move.

Accordingly, we at the Transatlantic Policy Network (TPN) are seeking ways to collaborate on a growth agenda. This week we are hosting an annual dialogue on Capitol Hill to discuss ways in which United States and European Union policymakers, in close partnership with the private sector, can reinforce our already strong relationship and cooperate on strategies that spur economic growth and opportunity.

The E.U. and U.S. partnership is often taken for granted, in part because it has been so successful. It remains a bulwark against the centrifugal forces that have been unleashed in recent years. But if we are to be successful in resisting those forces, we must work on deepening cooperation on economic issues.
To say that the U.S. and E.U. are interdependent is a gross understatement. According to the 2011 Transatlantic Economy, Annual Survey of Jobs Trade and Investment between the United States and Europe, from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, the U.S. and E.U. combined, account for over 54% of world GDP. Additionally, the U.S. and E.U. are one another’s primary source and destination for foreign direct investment, accounting for more than 60 percent of the inward stock of foreign direct investment (FDI), and more than 75 percent of outward FDI stock worldwide in 2009. Also, U.S. and E.U. - based companies comprise nearly two-thirds of the top R&D companies worldwide. And finally, the service economies of the U.S. and E.U. have never been more intertwined, in such sectors as financial services, telecommunications, utilities, insurance, advertising, computer services, and other activities.

Continued collaboration between the E.U and the U.S. and investment in the sectors that are leading growth on both continents is vital. Business enablers, like wireless and fixed broadband services, are essential to accelerate growth for companies large and small. Among the important areas for U.S. and E.U. collaboration, one critical opportunity is to minimize regulatory fragmentation in growth-enabling industries like this.

At this pivotal point in the global economy, it is important for the transatlantic alliance to be the engine of growth. If these great societies which share so much common history, values and interests can accelerate the power of free enterprise, innovation and technology, we will continue to provide the leadership the world so badly needs today. This is why we strongly support the current Jobs and Growth Initiative launched by U.S.-E.U. leaders last November seeking to boost trade and investment across the Atlantic.
