Hello All, Just wanted to point your attention to an article about this year's Bilderberg.

As always, there were the occasional three or four articles on all of Portuguese mainstream media that listed the Portuguese invitees and treated the meeting as a meaningless get-together of old rich people that don´t have anything better to do. But, as you know, this is the year that Francisco Pinto Balsemão, media mogul and member of the Bilderberg Steering Committee for more than three decades, passed the torch to his mate Durão Barroso, former president of the European Commission.

On Saturday June 13th, the main article in the main webpage of one the biggest Portuguese newspapers – Sol – was proudly titled "Durão Barroso is still on top of the world" (see attached screen-print). That was a quote from Ângelo Correia, one of the founders of the Portuguese political party PSD (to which Balsemão and Barroso belong), bragging about Barroso joining the Bilderberg Steering Committee. Having, just last year, being described in another mainstream newspaper as a "powerful mason", Ângelo Correia is one of the main political thinkers of PSD – and is widely recognised as the mentor of the current Prime Minister of Portugal.

In this Sol article, Ângelo Correia brags that "the major political, financial and academic leaders articulate at Bilderberg. (..) This brings influence and power to him" (Durão Barroso). In a way, Correia is implying that this is a great promotion to Barroso and that the Bilderberg group is – at least – as powerful as the European Commission. Correia also states that the position of President of Portugal – it has been speculated that Barroso would be a candidate in the 2016 presidential elections – would be completely irrelevant in comparison to his current position at the Bilderberg group. In an interview published by the newspaper Expresso (owned by Balsemão) in May 2010, Ângelo Correia complained that joining Bilderberg was harder than joining the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (ironically, the journalist that conducted this interview – Clara Ferreira Alves – would join Bilderberg in 2011).

In its last paragraph, Sol's article reiterated the powerful influence of Bilderberg: "The political ascension of Durão Barroso is linked to Bilderberg. He was invited to the meetings, near the two most important moments of his political career: in 2003 (after being elected Prime-Minister of Portugal and hosting the Azores Summit which preceded the Iraq War) and in 2005 (after being elected president of the European Commission)." The newspaper Sol had already admitted the Bilderberg kingmaker power in 2008, noting that some of the previous Prime Ministers of Portugal occupied those positions just months after joining Bilderberg.
