BILDERBERG BERNABE THE KNIFE FIGHTING FOR A CHAIRMAN POSITION
**************************************************
Telco board, Mediobanca committee to meet on nominees
* Bernabe may retain CEO role or become chairman-reports
* Bernabe hailed for prudent cost cuts, avoiding fireworks (Adds Telco board meeting scheduled for Monday)
By Deepa Babington
ROME, March 9 (Reuters) - Speculation over whether Franco Bernabe will retain his job as chief executive of Telecom Italia, Italy's biggest phone company, is growing ahead of meetings by controlling shareholders to draw up a new board.
Some analysts expect Bernabe, who has championed diligent cost-cutting and debt reduction over more headline-grabbing measures to turn around Telecom Italia, to stay on as CEO, but Italian media have reported he could be named executive chairman instead as major investors disagree on appointments.
"I view either (position for Bernabe) as a positive for investors as he is likely to continue to defend Telecom Italia from shareholder-unfriendly moves by the government, regulators, unions," said Bernstein analyst Robin Bienenstock.
The process kicks off on Thursday when the nominations committee at Mediobanca meets to draw up its nominees for the board and the CEO role, a source close the matter said. The board of Telco, which controls Telecom Italia with a 22.45 percent stake, will then meet on Monday, March 14, to finalise the list, the source said.
The Telco investor pact is made up of Italian investors Generali (GASI.MI), Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.MI) and Mediobanca (MDBI.MI) and Spanish phone giant Telefonica (TEF.MC).
Bernabe has often been attacked for bypassing radical initiatives to boost growth, but his fortunes have improved in recent weeks after the company's 2010 profit beat forecasts and it promised to boost dividend payouts 15 percent annually.
Telecom Italia shares are up 18 percent this year, outperforming the FTSE Italia all-share index, which rose 7.6 percent in the same period. They hit a 52-week high of 1.16 euros last week. Strong growth at its Brazilian and Argentine units have also spurred investor confidence in the company.
Bernabe has also won the support of Asati, which represents smaller investors in Telecom Italia and has warned that new management could create "strong repercussions" for the company.
A new CEO could also result in a new strategy or changes in the company's fibre-optic investment plans, Bienenstock said. Bernabe has won applause from analysts for fending off pressure from the Italian government and rival operators to invest more aggressively in a fibre-optic network.
Indeed, Bernabe has been on the defensive for much of his time since taking the helm in December 2007, resisting pressure to spin off the company's fixed-line unit and taking flak from unions for his plans to cut jobs.
He has also attracted criticism for not doing more to spur growth at home.
Bernabe has steadfastly maintained, however, that a former monopoly like Telecom Italia, weighed down by 31.5 billion euros of debt and falling revenues on its home turf, needs to work on improving efficiency first.
"It's true that in Italy, competition is strong and the pressure on prices is enormous," he told L'Espresso magazine. "But until the economy recovers, it is difficult to extract benefits from the home market. The only strategy possible is that of reducing costs, like we've been doing so far." The new markets of religion
Olivier Roy
«We have now a global religious market. People convert to any kind of religion, whatever their own cultural background – says Olivier Roy, French scholar of Islam, in this Resetdoc interview – It works, because these religions are now deculturalized religions, they have explicitily have cut the links with specific cultures. We can speak of McDonald's religions: they sell the same product anywhere in the world, they don't care to adapt to local cultures.»

Kissinger postpones appearance
By Andrew Knittle
The Norman Transcript The Norman Transcript Thu Mar 10, 2011, 01:17 AM CST
NORMAN — Former secretary of state Henry Kissinger postponed his appearance at the University of Oklahoma Wednesday due to an undisclosed illness, according to the university.
He was scheduled to appear during a fireside chat along with OU President David Boren, part of the President’s Associates Dinner on campus.
According to university officials, Kissinger wasn’t feeling well Wednesday morning and was ordered by his physician to remain in New York for precautionary reasons.
The former diplomat has visited the university once before, in 1997, at OU’s first-ever foreign policy conference.
Boren spoke with Kissinger on Wednesday morning and said the German-born diplomat will likely reschedule his appearance.
“He fondly remembers his visit to the OU campus several years ago and very much wanted to come today,” Boren said. “It is my hope that he can come in the fall, since Dr. Kissinger is a huge Sooner football fan.”
The postponement marks the second President’s Associates Dinner that’s been canceled in the last several weeks at OU.
In early February, Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren canceled his appearance because of a scheduling conflict.
University officials said they plan to re-schedule both events, but no announcements had been made, as of Wednesday evening.
The Harvard-educated Kissinger, who turns 87 in May, served as secretary of state under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, leaving office after Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, after more than three years on the job.
During most of the 1970s, Kissinger was heavily involved in U.S. foreign relations, including his role in shaping détente with the former Soviet Union and his famous, secret trip to China.
In 1973, Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Paris Peace Accords, which led to a cease-fire in Vietnam and the eventual withdrawal of U.S. forces from the war-torn nation.

OUR FRIEND JOAQUIN ALMUNIA THE BILDERBERGER HAS TO FAVORIZE THE BIGGER AND THE RICHER.HE IS BUSY...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
BRUSSELS(Dow Jones)--The European Commission will examine whether minority shareholders should be covered by the European Union's merger rules, EU antitrust chief Joaquin Almunia said Thursday.

|
|
I LET YOU JUDGE OF THE DIFFICULTIES AN EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER MAY ENCOUNTER.
******************************************************
.Sara Lee Corp. (SLE)’s sale of its insecticide unit to S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. is among the company’s divestments that’s required “extra care” from regulators, the European Union’s antitrust chief said.
The bug-killer deal is the latest Sara Lee sell-off to be examined in-depth by the European Commission after the regulator imposed conditions on Unilever’s plan to buy its shower-gel and European detergents.
The EU has “had to look into these deals with extra care” because the companies are active in the same industry, said Joaquin Almunia, the EU competition commissioner, in a Brussels speech today. Unilever’s pledge to sell the Sanex brand in Europe to win EU approval is “an example of our preference for remedies that are clear cut, structural and immediately effective.”
The EU’s antitrust agency can block deals if the combined company would have the power to fix prices or prevent new rivals emerging. Sanex was main reason why Unilever did the deal, said Andy Smith, an analyst at MF Global in London, in an interview earlier this month.
The commission extended its probe into the insecticide deal in December amid concerns the transaction may lead to “substantial overlapping activities” in Spain, France, Belgium, Greece and the Czech Republic.
Under the terms of the transaction, Sara Lee, based in Downers Grove, Illinois, would get 153.5 million euros ($212.4 million) for the insecticide business sought by closely held S.C. Johnson, the maker of Ziploc bags and Windex glass cleaner.
‘Compete Closely
The companies’ “household insecticide brands compete closely with each other in these countries, where the removal of an important competitor may lead to increased prices and less choice,” the commission said, adding that an offer last year of antitrust remedies by S.C. Johnson, maker of the Raid bug killer, “did not remove” competition concerns.
The EU agency has set a May 12 deadline to rule on the deal.
In today’s speech on merger review policy, Almunia said EU regulators would avoid calls for it to take into account trade or political concerns when it probes deals.
He said the EU approved Prysmian SpA (PRY)’s bid for cablemaker rival Draka Holding NV (DRAK) “exclusively on competition analysis” without examining a parallel cartel investigation into the two companies or allegations that a rival Chinese bidder received Chinese state subsidies.
Almunia also said the commission is studying a possible extension of EU merger rules to encompass minority shareholdings. The EU’s antitrust agency currently only looks at deals that give a company control of another.

HOUSTON (CNNMoney) -- Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger delivered a sobering analysis on the unrest sweeping across the Middle East Thursday, telling leading energy industry experts that the recent protests may not pan out as smoothly as some hope.
Speaking at IHS's CERA's annual energy conference, Kissinger said most media reports have indicated the Mideast protests should result in a relative peaceful transition to more democratic regimes.
0Email Print Most experts speaking at the conference this week have said that while turmoil and change may come to the Middle East, the end result should be positive for the whole region and that oil supplies should remain stable.
While Kissinger made no prediction on the fate of Middle East oil, he threw cold water on the idea that the transition of power in the region would lead to a new era of democracy there.
"That's wishful thinking," said Kissinger, who as secretary of state in 1973 helped end the war between Israel, Egypt and Syria and largely shaped the current political makeup of the Middle East. "There's evidence of rejection of the previous model, but no evidence of what the new model will be."
Kissinger also said that "the ability of the United States to achieve its security concerns in the short term is now more problematic."

Here is the writing in 'New Europe' a greek paper, i believe,
saying some distorsions about our fight against Bilderberg (notably
about the extreme right current , when it is well known i am jewish).
But there is some truth at the end of the article, reason for which
i publish it here
**********************************************************
Conspiracy theorists make me laugh. So when I’m in need of comic relief, I occasionally check out the website of Jim Corr, knowing that its contents are a lot more entertaining than the music of his banal pop group The Corrs. For a number of years, Corr has been spouting pseudo-scientific gobbledegook in an attempt to persuade the gullible that man-made global warming is a hoax and that the collapse of the World Trade Centre wasn’t actually caused by the planes flown into it.
Just because conspiracy theorists are nearly always wrong doesn’t mean everything they say should be dismissed. A dedicated bunch of researchers and bloggers have made it their task to follow the activities of the Bilderberg Group, that bunch of businessmen and politicians which meets in top secrecy on an annual basis. Some of these researchers – like the Italian MEP Mario Borghezio – belong to the extreme-right and should be denounced as racist opportunists. Yet while warnings about the Bilberbergers wanting to create a new world government might be far-fetched, there are solid reasons to be wary of what they are up to. Any club of the wealthy and powerful which seeks to avoid scrutiny is by definition a threat to democracy. And so it is correct that questions were asked about why Herman Van Rompuy dined at a Bilderberg event near Brussels shortly before he was appointed the first full-time president of the European Council in November 2009. If nothing else, his attendance at the exclusive gathering indicates he is more eager to please Goldman Sachs and Shell than the 500 million mere mortals who live in the EU.
Van Rompuy’s behaviour since taking up office further signals that equality is not high on his list of concerns. Even though he trousers €25,000 per month – more than Barack Obama’s salary – he has the insolence to argue that the wages paid to ordinary workers should be kept under control. In a paper he prepared recently in tandem with José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission chief, Van Rompuy advocates that a system should be put in place whereby wage levels can be reduced if they are viewed as inimical to “competitiveness”. The two overpaid men also hope their system will lead to a higher retirement age.
Reading their plan, I was half expecting it to be titled “A Modest Proposal”. For it bears similarities to the thinking behind Jonathan Swift’s 1729 tract of that name, which recommended that the poor should eat their own children. The key difference, of course, is that Swift was being satirical, whereas the pair of unelected presidents are deadly serious.
It is instructive that their “modest proposal” focuses on the cost of labour. This illustrates that they are only interested in cutting the pay of the average worker, not the exorbitant salaries and bonuses offered to their Bilderberg buddies. And isn’t there something sadistic about how mainstream politicians are so fixated on raising the retirement age? The fact that people are living longer than ever before is one of Europe’s most awesome achievements. But instead of celebrating it, our rulers talk about people who manage to avoid kicking the bucket as a “pensions time-bomb”? Why shouldn’t we be able to draw down our pensions at 65 (or even earlier) and look forward to a lengthy and healthy retirement?
Visiting Budapest in December last, Van Rompuy paid a clumsy tribute to the Hungarian writer Sándor Márai. It was fitting, he said, that Márai had spent time in 1920s Frankfurt meditating on whether there were some intellectuals who identified more with Europe than with their own home countries, given that the German city now hosts the European Central Bank. According to Van Rompuy, the ECB is “the institution at the heart of Europe’s new political identity”.
Is that what Europe amounts to: a vast landmass controlled by a bank? If that’s true, then European citizens need to pay attention to the battle for labour rights in Wisconsin and start demanding back the powers we have ceded to a pin-striped cult.
Jean-Claude Trichet – the ECB head and another Bilderberger, as it happens - has been echoing Van Rompuy. Earlier this month, Trichet told EU governments that the “priority must be to enhance wage flexibility”. In layperson’s terms, that means the working poor should be made poorer.
Economics derives from the Greek term “oikonomia”, which means management of a household. No head of household would be satisfied if the price of keeping costs low was that everyone in the family was miserable. Van Rompuy should be ashamed of himself, then, for using a trip to Bucharest last month to say he is “delighted that Romania has turned the corner economically”. Under pressure from the EU and the International Monetary Fund, Romania has introduced some of the cruellest cuts in Europe recently. Public sector wages have been slashed by 25% and – contrary to the rosy picture painted by Van Rompuy – Romania remains in severe difficulty.
Nigel Farage, the idiotic MEP with the UK Independence Party, provoked an uproar in 2010 when he alleged Van Rompuy had “the appearance of a low-grade bank clerk”. Hurling insults based on how somebody looks is unbecoming of a politician. And besides, Van Rompuy is no low-grade bank clerk. He is a right-leaning ideologue with a lot of influence. And he is using that influence to cause huge pain in the real world.
