The idea of a saviour is an interesting one. It is common in orthodox Christianity because the faithful are taught that they cannot save themselves.

They must therefore look to a church and its faith to save them. And for centuries the common people were not allowed to read the Bible. This reinforced the dependency - no heaven unless you were a member of that church.

And the issue is: Can good works get a human to the heaven they are taught exists?

The orthodox answer is that good works are useless that faith alone can save.

And no doubt there are plenty of biblical quotations for and against

But are humans entirely satisfied with the idea that faith alone can save?

Perhaps not. Hence the worldwide movement to be responsible stewards of the planet and its species

In Masonry there is no saviour because the Mason considers that his or her good works are what earn reward after death

Just to repeat: Since Masonry does not require faith, it does not require a saviour

But that is hard for many Christians who are disturbed when others do not accept their beliefs

For myself I would be happy to be with a Christian who both believed and practised good works

Cheers

R

masonry DOES require a faith, because no man should engage in any great or important undertaking without first invoking the blessings of diety....... your faith is left up to you however, and many christians feel this as a slap in the face, why? beacuse in lodge, by lodge rules they dont have a place for christians to clone and assimilate other poor unwitting souls. (my words, not masonry)

That is an interesting point

Where I come from the candidate is required to state a belief in God rather than a faith

And I wonder if it is possible to believe in God's existence without having a faith that some particular response or favor would come from God

For example, do some humans believe in God but have no faith that God will help them

Of course, ultimately when we see God we no longer require faith or belief

Cheers
